Who would write those lua scripts? There is quite a disproportion
between the number of people who understand shell and the number of
people who understand lua.

I can concur: shell has so many oddities over lua (think = vs == and [
vs [[) and people don't seem to understand them, it's why they mix it up
in e.g. the build recipes. ;-)
