The recent kernel v4.14.9 release breaks NVIDIA driver. There's a

ling-v 384-98-modules-with-linux-v4-14-9-/, do you mind applying it?

FYI: 4.14.11 will break NVIDIA drivers again in another way. With the
integration of the KPTI patchset it introduces a GPL license problem.
Details see <http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=2180>

jftr, installed 4.14.9-5 this am and NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-387.34.run
installed just fine.

and indeed my record may not be worth much, had not yet rebooted.

rebooting that system atm.

and I can not correctly confirm that the nv driver did install and works.
Where did you get 387.34 ? It's anot announced yet on
<https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/99/unix-graphics-announcements-and-news/>
387.34 will probably work with 4.14.9 and 4.14.10. But the problem with
4.14.11 has to be fixed by the kernel devs. Only they have the right to change
the license of that symbol in an official patch. Of course you can change the
license in a kernel used only by you. But you don't have the right to
distribute that kernel then.
