What Martin write means you should allow Xorg use the integrated
modeset driver by not having xf86-video-intel installed. It's easier
and simpler than configuring manually via /etc/X11/xorg.conf* to not
use an installed xf86-video-intel driver. If it doesn't help, reinstall

The switch to the integrated modest driver does not work. It still asks
for xf86-video-intel.

Do you have an xorg.conf that refers to the intel driver?

No, there is no xorg.conf

Interesting in this context: same issue as described in the bug is
visible in runlevel 3 as well. So you can't even use the command prompt
with kernel 4.13.1

You probably need to check and redo the initrd after removing the modules?

Did that as well, but did not help.

Did you try purging Plymouth, and removing quiet and splash from cmdline?

WFM, but not mobile:
# grep RETT /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="openSUSE Tumbleweed"
# uname -a
Linux gx620 4.13.1-1-default #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Sep 10 12:02:44 UTC 2017
(0d725b5) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
# inxi -G -c0
Resuming in non X mode: glxinfo not found. For package install advice run: inxi
Graphics: Card: Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller
Display Server: 1.19.3 drivers: intel (unloaded:
tty size: 117x35 Advanced Data: N/A for root

IME, the modesetting driver is not supported for 945G/GZ, so maybe isn't for
945GM either?
