Konsole->TabBar

I don't see what your point is.
I'm now running Leap 42.2 and myu screen is wide enough )1280px) that even with
5 tabs open there still empty space, and double clicking in the space creates
another tab.

Oops, there are 6 more!
And the tab width shrinks so there's always some blank space.
