I had the exact same behavior but with radeon driver sometime ago.
Removing the xf86-video-ati (in your case xf86-video-nouveau) makes
the system to use the modeset driver and plasma was coming up without
issues. Maybe it helps as a workaround but for sure needs more
investigation.
