I basically agree. I'd probably be a bit more radical in ripping out those patterns too. I rarely have the desire to install e.g. emacs for technical writing for example ;-)
However, patterns serve another not so visible purpose: they predetermine what ends up on the DVD. Ie the DVD pulls in the rest_dvd pattern which in turn requires a number of other patterns. So even though e.g. the "Mail and News server" pattern looks like an odd combination to install it makes sure those packages end up on the DVD. So we're somewhat abusing patterns to mark 'important' packages. I'm sure we can find some other way to do that though.

Thanks for the important info, i'll make sure that any packages that are removed from all other patterns are added to the correct rest patterns for now and if we come up with a better way to handle them it will be easy to remove the old patterns. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adeliade Australia, UTC+9:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B
