Using rbrown's words, the "Printing" pattern combines the "functional" and "collection" pattern types. Would it perhaps make sense to have "Printing:Basic" plus "Printing:HP", "Printing:Epson", ... ??
Also using rbrown's words, what I would like to see first and foremost is 'syncing up' the openSUSE patterns with the SLE patterns so that there is a common base as starting point. Assume this happens so that in particular the openSUSE "Printing" pattern matches the SLE "Printing" pattern, then openSUSE contributors could split the "Printing" pattern into smaller pieces and maintain each of them as needed by the openSUSE users.
Not to mention those 15000+ PPD files I have installed on my system ...
Not to mention all those zillions other "useless" files that one gets installed by default. It seems you installed a default system but actually you may prefer to start with a minimal system and manually add what you need. Or are you perhaps really short of disk space? Usually one has plenty of Gigabytes up to some Terabytes. Why should one care by default too much about Megabytes? I would appreciate it if such comments would be made with some credit for basic intelligence that there is probably a valid reason behind why the current default is as it is. Hint: Search Bugzilla and you can find things like https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=808315 Perhaps that reason is no longer valid nowadays or something is even plain wrong with that reason. No real problem: Just contribute fixes to openSUSE. openSUSE contributors can do what they need and maintain it as they need it - e.g. an openSUSE default system without printer drivers and PPDs RPMs installed. I have zero personal opinion what the right openSUSE default system should be. For my personal usage any default system is always somehow "wrong".
