Add a trailing slash and they magically do exist. It's Apache rewrite rules.
Apparently I phrased my question badly. It should have been:
Why does
http://download.opensuse.org/update/
not have a tumbleweed link to click on? I routiunely use a web browser on this system to find out when an updated package is available that one of my non-booted installations is waiting on in order to solve some problem or confirm a announced fix works.
as tumeblweed and factory are the same, the tree is only published a single time and then linked server side... for your purpose, at this moment, the best is to follow the 'factory' link. Will be a fun exercises to change the publishing to use /tumbleweed as the leading name :)
ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse.org/update/tumbleweed
You're not supposed to use mirrors directly... they can't have all the information download.o.o has (like the apache rewrite rules)
MC ftp cannot chdir to "/ftp://download.opensuse.org". AFAICT mirrorbrain presumes people use only zypper or yast and only in graphical.target, and doesn't like MC users running in multi-user.target fetching individual packages, directory content listings, package timestamps, or new .repo files from it. Thus AFAIK going to individual mirrors is required to get these things without X running. Do we have some other choice?
zypper works in text mode only (it doesn't have any relation to
graphical.target). and mirrorbrain doesn't know about it.
MC can't connect to ftp://download.opensuse.org because there is no FTP
interface: there is only http://download.opensuse.org
Mirrorbrain is an apache module... apache serves http, not ftp. MC, on
the other hand, does not understand http:// so it's simply not the tool
to talk to download.o.o.
X running or not running is not the criteria.. you want to use an FTP
client - in this case, yes, you need to connect to an FTP mirror. You
can be classified an advanced user and should thus be able to use
the /factory links as well (it IS the same.. really.. there is no
difference between Factory and Tumbleweed)
