So, your script will fail if "$TAR" is 'star'. after uploading it to bugzilla I realized that different *tar implementations probably will require different options. I tested only with GNU tar and used its info page for reference...
But upstream has wanted to implement utar as extfs for years.... I intend to have a go at it myself, but don't hold your breath and I may close above bnc as (i don't know as what, an upstream issue, WONTFIX, INVALID, whatever ;). for my purposes it is working now...
