Most of my installs are net installs started using Grub from HD after downloading installation kernel and initrd only. I rarely start an installation by booting from CD, DVD or USB. Net installs are clearly slower than local media installs, but still plenty fast enough for me with an 8MB connection speed. Failures are usually limited to defects in pre-release versions, or trying to perform installation from a mirror in the process of syncing. Maybe once or twice in my whole life have I installed from any live media other than the granddaddy and supreme ruler of live Linux media, Knoppix.
When trying to install to a low RAM system, be sure you have a swap partition configured before starting the installer.
