Does that code build with -Werror? Warnings are not there to be annoying.. there are signs to be taken serious.

While it is possible that the compiler is generating buggy code, the most likely scenario is KDE3 abandonware having a bug.
KDE3 may have a bug but that bug will surely be fixed if confirmed. Transition from GCC-4.3 to GCC-4.6 also made kmail to crash anthough it was building well. The bug (the incompatibility with the new compiler) was traced and fixed.
