I've been trying to get the new lilo to build since July - it doesn't build for SLES_11_SP1 and openSUSE 11.3, which is basically where I am stuck.
I have successfully used lilo in openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4 i586 platform, and this is the first time that I run into troubles with it even if I am absolutely aware that openSUSE team prefer grub. I have had earlier a discussion about some backwards compatibility issues in kernel modules - seem we are about to face the same situation with lilo :( It would be very important to come to a common understanding that Opensuse as an open Linux platform might be used in some other way than OpenSuSE install product - where the backwards compatibility is an important factor. I would not break or discourage the innovation and the new development, but I prefer to see backwards compatibility making other depending products life easier. Of course, I am aware that I can myself build, add and use whatever package and version is needed... but it is much more comfortable to have it out of the box... and for the factory or packaging it does not mean considerably more work.
