The first type is integrated DSL Modem/Router boxes which are in fact small
busybox linux systems. They come with a web interface and do PPPoE on their
own, transparent to the attached pc.

Second are modem-only devices which don't do PPPoE by themselves but require a
client router / client pc to handle the PPPoE stuff directly.

The latter are becoming out of fashion but they still exist.
