I see that package-lists-openSUSE-X11-cd has a requires on kernel-default but I'm not sure whether that is installed. Yeah, this looks strange.
I suggest to file a bugreport,
preload recommends preload-kmp and this is provided by preload-kmp-desktop and preload-kmp-default. You have preload-kmp-desktop locked and as such the solver picks kernel-kmp-default, which requires kernel-default.
Btw, you can use deptestomatic -v -v solver-test.xml to get some more informations.
Stephan, thanks for your reply... It makes perfect sense, except that zypper seems not to agree: 3120-3560:/etc/zypp # zypper ll There are no package locks defined. 3120-3560:/etc/zypp # zypper inr Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... Resolving package dependencies... The following NEW packages are going to be installed: kernel-default preload-kmp-default 2 new packages to install. Overall download size: 31.9 MiB. After the operation, additional 128.2 MiB will be used. Continue?
