To help with the solution of this problem, please go to http://www.linux-tips-and-tricks.de/index.php/ and download the script named collectNMData.sh. Disconnect the wire to your Ethernet connection, then run the script. The output should help you discover the problem. AFAIK, the version of ath5k in RC2 is OK. I don't have such a device, but I have not seen a lot of complaints.
