Amazingly how there are different perceptions, zypper dup is what I always use with great success across 7 boxes so far. The last upgrade I did I reckoned was going to be the tough one, 10.3 --> 11.2 M8 using the 11.2 M8 DVD, then zypper dup to factory - absolutely no problems. It's been a very long time since I last used "zypper up". I have another 10.3 box to upgrade for a relative when I can get around to his home and I shall be able to do so knowing it works.
