This is a side-effect of merging "fast-boot" stuff from Moblin. Major drivers including HD-audio are built into the kernel to boot faster.
I personally don't like this situation, as it reduces the debug flexibility very much. Hopefully a post module-linking will be usable soon later so that these can be built as modules again...

Thanks for the reply, I certainly hope they do go back to module form soon as there are a bunch of people that are wanting to try their xfi's out (not to mention the many bug fixes since 1.0.20 release.).
In such a case, just request via openFATE! Without a FATE request, I cannot put any (non-fix) backport patch. If I got a FATE request, you would have already the XFi support in SUSE kernel even now...
