[opensuse-factory] The frustration of updating

Hi, After a few weeks of staying with one state of the Factory system, I decided to update to a current state once again a few hours ago. This requires about 5 GB of download and a few hours to run, so it's not something I'm doing lightly and often. And once again, as so often, YaST started to spit out errors right in the middle of the process telling me the Factory repo doesn't contain some of the packages it wanted to install - probably it's been updated underneath my install and the packages had been replaced with newer versions. I canceled and tried again and then I ran into the same problem with the KDE4 Desktop OBS repo halfway in the install. Can't we have some system that doesn't frustrate you by pulling out files you need right while you're installing them? Couldn't OBS keep files, say, 12-24h after they have been removed from the repo index? This is frustrating enough that I'm only updating this system very rarely nowadays, and I think updating often and testing newer stuff is actually what Factory should be about. The problems I should deal with (if any at all) are ones that arise due to new code, not due to the repo info not matching the available files at the time I'm actually trying to install them. [opensuse-factory] issues with command-not-found speed

Hello! Yesterday I have found out that from time to time, when I type a typo, it takes a huge amount of time until a "command of found message" appears and I can continue my work. Now I am able to reproduce it every time on my rc1 machine: > time sl bash: sl: command not found real 0m1.289s user 0m0.228s sys 0m0.040s Typing "echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches" enables me to reproduce it every time (not doing it means that it happens at random). I am quite sure that our command-not-found package is to blame. I do not know how come it is that slow (I have only some five repositories defined) but it kind of drives me mad. So first - could you tell me a way to disable this functionality? (Commenting out the last line in /etc/bash_command_not_found does not seem to help.) And then, are there any known issues like that? I would like to see this problem fixed but I am afraid we might find out that we simply cannot do any better with Python. [opensuse-factory] Plan for 11.2?

Hi, I'm wondering if there is a plan for the 11.2 distribution? It's not when it's available but more what Novell want's to achieve with it. There are several important areas that I would like to help out with: 1. vastly reduced size of the core distro and easy setup for addons. Take out all but core KDE (and Gnome, but I'm a KDE'er so....). 2. mobility. Moving between networks, WLAN, LAN, GPRS , Bluetooth ++. Suspend/Resume, auto setup of VPN when moving outise the home LAN. Roaming profile/autosyncing of data with server with Unison , iFolder or similar. 3. syncing data with mobile phones 4. VPN client and server config. If so, choose one VPN server variant and support it 100%. (I like OpenVPN :-) ) 5. Home. Easy home server setup in one Yast module for useability. Fileserver, printer server, music server, movie server, picture server. 6. Connectivity from different types of clients, especially Upnp and DLNA compatibility. Windows, Mac and Linux client access to printer and file of cource and also wizards or simmilar to aid users in getting connected on the client machines. (Yes this might involve windows/mac/openSolaris SW) 7. media syncing with hanheld devices like iPod's, media phones, Creative ZEN. Also conversion of media to the hanhelds preferred format without the user needing to set up a complex structure. 8. officially supported game archive, maybe also with commercial games available like Opera/flash etc. is now available. 9. availability on new platforms. Specific focus on netbooks. 10. Default media made for USB key as well as DVD. 11. a standard yast module for server setup of net install of machines. This will aid in testing when there is a lot of machine variants to test. Easy restore to original config would be good also. (All server based :-) ) I have 15+ different computeres that I can test with , but it's to much work going back and forth now so I just use 2. Of course, if I do not make any sense (which often happens) I will be glad to discuss the points. And again, these are all parts I will gladly assist in testing. If some of it is made in Python I will try to assist with code also, but be warned. It's better to keep me as tester! Hi, The Factory LiveCDs are no longer in my private acount, but are now published automatically once they built: http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/ Right now only x86_64 finished, but you can monitor the progress in the openSUSE:Factory:Live OBS project. Otherwise there is little progress to report atm. Factory works flawless though, which is the good news :) We enabled some security checks, so some more failures are currently in openSUSE:Factory, but nothing to worry about in the current state. After installing a package why not ask if the user wants to install or remove more packages before bringing up the YaST2 Writing the system configuration? This would save a lot of time and make things faster when multiple uses of Software Management is going to happen I would think. Hello, Is this a known Problem ? on my x86_64 System ( I mean after Kernel update) the system is going very slow, by copying bigger Files on SATA Drives ? [opensuse-factory] Successor WANTED for maintaining build scripts of fglrx driver

Hi I'm searching for a successor for maintaining the openSUSE build scripts of the fglrx driver, i.e. the stuff you can find in packages/SuSE when you extract the ATI installer. These files are version controlled via git on phoronix, so ATI can pick them up for a new (beta) release. Benefits are access to ATI's beta mailing list, early beta releases of the driver and your name being mentioned as maintaining these bits. Apart from me no longer being available soon to update the scripts for newer driver releases , there's also room for improvement for these scripts, e.g. a radical cleanup and adding of new features. On one box everything works fine, kde4 factory installed. On this box at the same level I see the problem as "root" so far with qjackctl and VirtualBox.
