After some more testing, it's obvious that the "slowness" and locking up of the 11.1b5 KDE 4.1 desktop is either the Intel video driver or problems in "x"....I suspect the later.

As in my 11.1B5 review post, I can't put my finger on the problem, but I notice it. Especially when working with KDE control center. I assumed the subsystem, being "x" because there are the same problems on systems with other video than Intel.
Fred
I have an nvidia 8800GT and I saw it with the fbdev (frame buffer), nv and nvidia drivers. I still see it with the graphics system fully configured and the graphics performance under 11.1 is 50% what it is under 11.0 kde3. On 11.1 Beta 5 I get:
21:13 arete~> glxgears 20919 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4183.754 FPS 22198 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4439.556 FPS 21181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4236.142 FPS
I get over 10,000 FPS in 10.3 and over 9,000 FPS in 11.0. There is something wrong with the Graphics subsystem.
To follow up, I want to add a little more data for comparison purposes. After solving the bootloader mess, I booted the 11.1 Beta5 test machine to its normal 11.0 install. The exact same machine, only difference is 11.0 is booted from 2 Seagate 500G drives in RAID1, while 11.1 is booted from a single Seagate 500G drive. Graphics performance difference (see 11.1 above): 11.0 Same MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum; Phenom 9850; GeForce 8800GT: 39998 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7999.538 FPS 41461 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8292.127 FPS 38991 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7798.190 FPS 39446 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7889.145 FPS 39832 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7966.265 FPS --> glx/aiglx enabled on all boxes Other Boxes - NVidia 10.3 - Tyan S2865; Opteron 180; GeForce 8600GT 42149 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8429.797 FPS 41859 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8371.764 FPS 42970 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8593.839 FPS 40823 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8164.469 FPS 42781 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8556.137 FPS 11.0 - MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR; Athlon XP 2800+; GeForce 6800GT 18653 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3730.495 FPS 18565 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3712.901 FPS 18799 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3759.653 FPS 18630 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3725.989 FPS 18657 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3731.382 FPS *** This is a startling result.
