[opensuse-edu] LIFE no login, no remote X but otherwise fine

Hi list and gurus - I'm new with this list and LI-F-E, but not new to LTSP and KIWI/LTSP. - over the last 7 days I've struggled to setup a plain vanilla KIWI/LTSP5 server - the problem being that ALL HP clients, but not any other type of client, causes a kernel panic at initrd stage. The network module in use is tg3. I've received lots of kind help from the people over at KIWI/LTSP. One of the suggestions (as we're all pretty desperate now) was to download and install LI-F-E. So done. This is now installed on a standard HP ProLiant serverbox (32bit). A part from a slight confusion on my part setting up the network - you use something called br (bridged) and you don't use eth0 directly - once I got that configured correctly, the server itself works fine. I browses the net and all. Then I run into problems. a) I enable 'remote access to X' in the sysconfig. I run SuSEconfig, switch down to runlevel 3 and back up to 5 again. No remote X. Nada. And I kill the firewall as well. I reboot. Nada. Eh...that's the first thing I don't understand, I give (on my laptop) X :1 -query <IP-of-server>. Any hints to what I'm doing wrong here? b) THIS IMPLEMENTATION OF LTSP BOOTS MY TROUBLED HP CLIENTS! I shout that out, because it's a major step forward :-) And it's fast. c) but alas, it will not let me login. I setup a virginal new user, type the username and password, it then takes a long time verifying and finally states that there is no contact to server. Restarts and over we go again... What could be that culprit here? The logs are empty. 2.6.31.12-0.1-default is the kernel version that came with the LI-F-E iso. All and any help is greatly appreciated! Dear Werner, Thank you very much for you answer. Personally I do not see the education repo as the place to go. Education seems to me to be run like a opensuse distro flavoured for education, as you noticed too, mainly highschool and general education rather than research. An up to date repo for science is needed and will have to accommodate the chaotic development of scientific software rather then go well structured route of software engineering. I just used YaST to install brlcad onto opensuse 11.2 from the Education repository. It's throwing up errors when I try to run it and I'm wondering if I've missed an install step or something. It's installed itself into /opt/brlcad which seems reasonable and is different to the brlcad default so is I guess an opensuse customisation. I added /opt/brlcad/bin to my path but when I try to run mged it says: > mged Using Tcl library at /usr/lib64/tcl/tcl8.5 Itcl_Init ERROR: Can't find a usable itcl.tcl in the following directories: /usr/lib64/tcl/itcl3.4 /opt/brlcad/bin/../lib/itcl3.4 /opt/brlcad/bin/../library /opt/brlcad/bin/../../library /opt/brlcad/bin/../../itcl/library /opt/brlcad/bin/../../../itcl/library This probably means that Itcl/Tcl weren't installed properly. If you know where the Itcl library directory was installed, you can set the environment variable ITCL_LIBRARY to point to the library directory. Can't find a usable itk.tcl in the following directories: /usr/lib64/tcl/itk3.4 /opt/brlcad/bin/../lib/itk3.4 /opt/brlcad/bin/../library /opt/brlcad/bin/../../library /opt/brlcad/bin/../../itk/library This probably means that Itcl/Itk weren't installed properly. If you know where the Itk library directory was installed, you can set the environment variable ITK_LIBRARY to point to the library directory. MGED Aborted. find says that itcl.tcl is in /opt/brlcad/lib64/itcl3.4/itcl.tcl Obviously, I could keep changing more environment variables until it runs but I wonder if this is supposed to be automated or if there is a list of what needs changing? Dear All, I am trying to solve the mysteries of science and education repos from our obs. All these are done in order to understand and see how the opensuse can provide in an efficient centralised way (aka one repo) packages for science/research community. Please have in mind that software developed and used by scientists/researchers a lot of time is far away from what we call good software engineering practise. Frequent releases are a common feature, sometimes the release concept does not exist at all. So if we want to help attract the research community in the opensuse world we will need a repo that accommodates their ways of working.
