timidity is probably better solution, easier to use as stand alone:
- it has included graphical frontend, 
- can run as a server for instance for rosegarden if audio adapter doesn't 
support midi, 
The only thing that will improve sound and number of instruments is to include 
freepats out of the box, instead of present sound patches.

Missing was timidity. 
Rosegarden seems not to be in distribution for some time.
I can't find it in Factory and Education repository too.
