We have just got our suse 9.0 upgarde and pro discs. Is there any difference between them? Ive been trying to upgrade my machine, but it wont boot from the CD. It has a Windows NTFS partion and a linux partion. Ive told it to only boot from the CD in bios even disabling booting from HDD. But it just wont do it! I tried using and old suse 8.2 disc, but I get the same result. I tried searching on the internet but as I didnt really know what I was searching for I came up with nothing. If anyone could point me in the direction of some how-to's or tell me where I might be going wrong. It would be very much appreciated. Cheers
Can't vouch for SuSE, but i've had problems trying to boot some RedHat CD's particularly those where the floppy image is 2.88MB. In those situations, there's usually a directory containing floppy images (/boot??).
Any idea what the boot image is called? Is there an easier way of doing this? Can it be dont through Yast?
Browsing through the Suse 8.2 DVD I received recently, courtesy of Linux Magazine, there's a /boot directory. The contents look like this: [root@booboo boot]# ls -la total 67881 dr-xr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Mar 19 2003 . dr-xr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Mar 19 2003 .. -r--r--r-- 1 root root 1474560 Mar 18 2003 bootdisk -r--r--r-- 1 root root 2228 Mar 18 2003 LIESMICH -r--r--r-- 1 root root 2305 Mar 18 2003 LIESMICH.DOS dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 19 2003 loader -r--r--r-- 1 root root 1474560 Mar 18 2003 modules1 -r--r--r-- 1 root root 577 Mar 18 2003 modules1.txt -r--r--r-- 1 root root 1474560 Mar 18 2003 modules2 -r--r--r-- 1 root root 1474560 Mar 18 2003 modules3 -r--r--r-- 1 root root 3638 Mar 18 2003 modules3.txt -r--r--r-- 1 root root 1474560 Mar 18 2003 modules4 -r--r--r-- 1 root root 2374 Mar 18 2003 modules4.txt -r--r--r-- 1 root root 2116 Mar 18 2003 README -r--r--r-- 1 root root 2194 Mar 18 2003 README.DOS -r--r--r-- 1 root root 13730857 Mar 18 2003 rescue -r--r--r-- 1 root root 1471338 Mar 17 2003 rescuefloppy -r--r--r-- 1 root root 46903296 Mar 18 2003 root -r--r--r-- 1 root root 812 Mar 19 2003 TRANS.TBL "bootdisk" is your friend, but, depending on your hardware, you may also need one or more of the "modulesn" disks. Refer to modulesn.txt. I would imagine that Suse 9 is much the same, but please don't shoot me if it's not. -- jez Our capacity for understanding is inversely proportional to how much we think we know.
