By "reading", I assume e-mails that are already in your mbox. Hmm, sending them has nothing to do with your ability to access your mbox (usually /var/spool/mail/$USER).
yeah reading the mails that have already been downloaded.
Exactly *which* process are you checking for (I assume it is "kmail") and in what state is it reported in (Z, S, etc). This is fundamentally important in diagnosing your problem since it might help us determine how kmail is dying.
You should include a listing of "pstree" and "ps wax" in your next e-mail, please.
Yes kmail, er state is S I think. Ok all the following details are kmail has 'crashed' but before I manually kill the process. This normally happens maybe once a day but it's done it 4 times already this morning.
It could be that kmail is locking your mbox. When you try and "kill" kmail, also check that "/var/run/pid/kmail.pid" is no longer there, and if it is "rm" it.
There is no kmail.pid in /var/run (/var/run/pid doesn't exist) Even when I manually kill the process and relaunch it there is no pid by that name
I'm suspecting that your mbox is being locked by kmail. I would suggest that you run a test, whereby you run kmail. Open a terminal and issue:
tail -f /path/to/mail/box/mail_box_file
If I run tail -f /home/matt/mbox I get ------------------ emanon:/home/matt # tail -f /home/matt/mbox Subject: SuSEconfig: rc.config_check Status: RO This is a warning message. The following variables seem to be doubled in /etc/rc.config and/or the files in /etc/sysconfig : /etc/sysconfig/security:REJECT_ALL_INCOMING_CONNECTIONS="" /etc/sysconfig/personal-firewall:REJECT_ALL_INCOMING_CONNECTIONS=no Please check which of the instances is correct. -------------------
and then send an e-mail to the mailbox and see what the results are.
Results where? If I send an email to me I see "You have mail in /var/spool/mail/matt" in the shell. Thanks Matt
