I knew I'd know....
I originally cheated by using WinLinux 2000, but to put it bluntly, it was
crap. I wouldn't recognise my graphics adaptor and I was stuck with 16
colours, I could only see a portion of the screen till I wacked the res
right up..........
Thanks for the explanation. I would just like to commend this list for not
making me feel as embarrassed as I would elsewhere, as I like to think that
I've had a lot of experience in my native NT and I'm rather good.....so it's
humbling to come down to the Linux level, and experience how some of my
students must feel......

VMWare is a very cool piece of commercial software which allows you to run another operating system on top of Linux or on top of Windows NT. It does this essentially by emulating PC hardware in software, so you can for instance run VMWare on Linux and then install Windows into VMWare. Windows thinks it's being installed on hardware, but it's actually being installed into a software emulation of hardware. So you can run Windows or some other OS in a window on Linux. And when Windows crashes - no harm done.
