Das 'chmod 400' muesste das '//', 'john' und 'rootpass' als weitere Argumente aufgefasst haben, d.h. du hast effektiv wohl 'chmod 400 /' und 'chmod 400 rootpass' ausgefuehrt. Das 'chmod 400 john' muesste zu einer Fehlermeldung ("no such file or ..." bzw. "keine solche Datei..." gefuehrt haben. Abhilfe: 'chmod 755 /'. Zur Not vom Rettungssystem aus.
