Nope. It only promotes a stupid greek behavior of gathering any (semi) important piece of paper of any tech (or whatever) event people attend.
Hey all!
Even though what Dimitris says appears to be a general fact for greek bureaucracy, just like Izabel mentioned an attendance certificate can have many more uses (more practical and essential).
It is close to impossible to prove that you are attend such conferences without such a certificate, since you don't have some receipt for your payment or anything similar. Such a certificate would be the only way to prove you attendance when you apply in a university, for instance, specially universities outside of Greece where extracurricular activities play a more significant role at student selection. And that is very important for people that are still undergoing any kind of education. And we do have such people in our community.
Last but not least, it is a nice recognition to all the volunteers and organizers that play a significant role in the organization of such conferences.
My opinion remains the same since the very first time that this was discussed. I strongly support the idea of giving a certificate of attendance - and there are fast and easy ways to offer it to people that really attended. Not that it would really hurt anyone if we give out an extra one. Such a certificate can only benefit people that know how to use it properly, and for those people it matters and its worth our time to think about it and implement it.
On a more practical note, Carlos has already worked on a certificate layout for oSC13, which was never used. I will be happy to further work with Carlos to finalize it and give it to board for approval - and possibly further follow up on board's comments.
It is not just a Greek thing. I know it is greatly appreciated in Brazil and in India, students also can receive credit for this. Honestly, I can't think of a reason to NOT do it, other than that somebody has to do some work for it. /J
