Funny, I had this issue just last week and figured out how to resolve this.

By default matplotlib uses 'Agg' which doesn't render any graphs (on Linux at
least). Other backends have to be installed. I successfully used TkAgg and
GTK3Agg that you have to set in

/usr/lib64/python3.6/site-packages/matplotlib/mpl-data/matplotlibrc

The RPMs that need to be installed for the above backends are:

python3-matplotlib-tk
python3-matplotlib-gtk3

I am not sure yet how to solve this on a packaging level.
