"In the background" means it's other processes than firefox that are segfaulting? Too bad cpu number is not reported there, in case it's cpu 3...
With "in the background" I meant, that Firefox did not crash entirely (showing the 'report this incident to mozilla' window). The segfaults were mostly in libcurl or "Web Content" (which is a part of Firefox as I understand). This resulted in individual tabs crashing. But they could be reloaded with a click on the refresh button. This all seems to be internal Firefox magic. But all these occurrences showed a segfault in the journal.
What about disabling only cpu3 and testing firefox on cpu7?
I will try that and report.
How can I find out if its the hardware that is faulty?
Do you know of a kernel version that worked fine on this system?
As I wrote in comment #19, it started after the kernel update from 4.12.14-lp150.11.something to 4.12.14-lp150.12.48.1.x86_64
Can you go back to it and verify that it still works?
I will try to go back to this kernel verrsion and verify if it works.
Can you check in /proc/cpuinfo that the 'microcode', 'flags' and 'bugs' fields are identical for all of 8 logical processors?
Yes, they are all the same for all 8 logical processors: microcode : 0x8e bugs : cpu_meltdown spectre_v1 spectre_v2 spec_store_bypass l1tf flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall nx pdpe1gb rdtscp lm constant_tsc art arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good nopl xtopology nonstop_tsc cpuid aperfmperf tsc_known_freq pni pclmulqdq dtes64 monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 sdbg fma cx16 xtpr pdcm pcid sse4_1 sse4_2 x2apic movbe popcnt tsc_deadline_timer aes xsave avx f16c rdrand lahf_lm abm 3dnowprefetch cpuid_fault epb invpcid_single pti ssbd ibrs ibpb stibp tpr_shadow vnmi flexpriority ept vpid ept_ad fsgsbase tsc_adjust bmi1 hle avx2 smep bmi2 erms invpcid rtm mpx rdseed adx smap clflushopt intel_pt xsaveopt xsavec xgetbv1 xsaves dtherm ida arat pln pts hwp hwp_notify hwp_act_window hwp_epp flush_l1d -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
