If the device cannot be identified by a textual identification, we either have
to give up and let user to configure it manually, use serial probe (dangerous)
or user assisted check.
I am afraid, that this situation has no easy solution.
I can imagine something like an user-assisted udev rules. Desktop system would
ask e. g.:
USB device with generic FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC identified
Please select the correct device:
Serial port
Serial modem
QStarz GPS device
Seika Braille display
Watts Up? Pro
...
[checkbox] Remember for this port only
Remember for [1 hour]
Notes:
- It seems that udev currently does not support physical USB port based rules.
- Braille devices need a special support, as these have to be supported during
the installation.
