I'm afraid that your device has the too old BIOS. The dock stores its own BIOS, and the old BIOS is known to be pretty buggy. In that sense, this bug report will be likely WONTFIX / INVALID. But at least let's see whether we can get any possible workaround.
Today I tried updating the dock firmware using DellDockingStationFwUp_1.0.0.8_20161220_WD15.exe After a few seconds (without a reboot) it said that the firmware was up to date. (IMO, either it was already up to date or the update failed...) I also updated the laptop firmware using Precision_5520_1.9.4.exe In the end there was no improvement to the audio quality.
