Bug ID: 1046970
Summary: Shotwell crashes when launching external editor
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE Distribution
Version: Leap 42.2
Hardware: x86-64
OS: openSUSE 42.2
Status: NEW
Severity: Critical
Priority: P5 - None
Component: GNOME
Assignee: bnc-team-gnome@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Reporter: ibboard@xxxxxxxxx
QA Contact: qa-bugs@xxxxxxx
Found By: ---
Blocker: ---

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101
Build Identifier:

If you edit a photo from Shotwell by right-clicking and selecting "Open With
External Editor" then it errors with a failed assertion and aborts with a core

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Shotwell
2. Right-click a photo and click "Open with External Editor"
Actual Results:
The external editor opens the picture, but Shotwell crashes with the following
at the console:

assertion failed: (readers.editable != null &&
Aborted (core dumped)
While parsing XMP metadata:
Error on line 39 char 1: End of element <exif:Flash> not expected in this
Metadata parasite seems to be corrupt

Expected Results:
External editor opens and Shotwell *doesn't* crash!

A similar sounding issue with a matching assertion failure was reported to
Debian ( and was fixed
by updating to v0.24 (although that was back in 2015 and v0.27 has recently
been released)
