Bug ID: 1046512
Summary: apache2 failure to start on boot when binding to
static IP
Classification: openSUSE
Product: openSUSE Distribution
Version: Leap 42.1
Hardware: x86-64
OS: openSUSE 42.1
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: Apache
Assignee: bnc-team-apache@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Reporter: dario@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
QA Contact: qa-bugs@xxxxxxx
Found By: ---
Blocker: ---

I normally work only with localhost and a bunch of locally-defined domain
names, but sometimes I need to have this machine accessed from outside my
network, so I also have this line in listen.conf:

Listen 192.168.178.33:80

which is normally commented out otherwise Apache fails to start at boot with
the error:

start_apache2[1089]: (99)Cannot assign requested address: AH00072: make_sock:
could not bind to address 192.168.178.33:80

A simple restart of the service solves the problem.

I tried to switch between wicked and NetworkManager, but the problem remains.

I did a bit of research and found:

[1] - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apache2/+bug/1207384
[2] -
https://pyro.eu.org/how-to/micro/nginx-cannot-assign-requested-address-ipv6.txt

I followed the suggestions and added the following line at the top of
/usr/sbin/start_apache2:

while ip addr show tentative | grep . > /dev/null ; do echo "Waiting..."; sleep
1 ; done

I get 3-4 times "Waiting..." in the log, but then Apache starts as expected.

Sorry I cannot upgrade to a more recent release at the moment, but since the
Ubuntu bug was filed in 2013, I figured it must be still around... ;)

Thanks for your help
Dario
