Here is the backported version of the upstream patch for kernel 4.4.

It applies cleanly to the opensuse 42.2 git master:

I just had to remove:
mm-enlarge-stack-guard-gap.patch
mm-do-not-collapse-stack-gap-into-THP.patch

Yes we will go with the upstream version of the patch in the end. But I would
like to understand what is going on here because older kernels will be more
trickier to get this upstream backport.
