Thank you for your help. I believe that it is actually a double regression:

From 4.10 to 4.11 the backlight is lost.
Kernel 4.12 boots to a black screen unless the nomodeset option is used. So now
we are back to how 4.9 used to behave on this laptop (/sys/class/backlight
empty).

I believe that the problem lies with Clevo. They should post kernel source that
makes their hardware work.

I am afraid that my journey with this laptop ends here. I bought a different
laptop without Clevo hardware, but otherwise similar specs and newer chipset,
and it works flawless with all kernels (4.9 and higher). I am downgrading the
Clevo hardware laptop (which I bought thinking that it was built by Medion) to
Windows 10 and giving it to my father. So I will not be able to test newer
kernels from then on.
