It seems that hardware-agnostic modesetting driver is better maintained than
nouveau (and Intel for that matter). For modern cards the Glamor acceleration
using GL is about as good and the card-specific code in the drivers. Of course,
different driver will trigger different bugs in different cards so there is no
choice that gives 100% better results in all cases.

Old cards with dedicated 2D engines still benefit from the card-specific
drivers significantly. New cards cards usually benefit more from the unified
development of modesetting getting more fixes across all hardware.
