Same problem on Leap-42.1 (x86_64). Installed updates including:

mysql-community-server-5.6.36-25.3.x86_64

After the update and reboot Wordpress failed to start with a database
connection error. Only hand-running the PHP as root allowed it to work. Took
a while to find the problem, but I confirmed that the permissions on the
/var/run/mysql directory were preventing any non-root user from connecting.

drwx------ 2 mysql mysql 60 May 11 14:53 mysql

Changing the permissions corrected the problem

drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql mysql 60 May 11 14:53 mysql
