As a laptop user, I do find NFS a bit clunky to work with. For example, it
often stalls the boot sequence if I'm away from home and can't mount the share.
In openSUSE 13.2, it would stall for five minutes, clearly not acceptable.

Also, if the network goes down, I find that Plasma, and many applications, will
often freeze. So there are issues with blocking operations on NFS that really
shouldn't block.

It's definitely not as easy to use NFS, as even Win95's SMB file sharing.
(Although at least it doesn't fail for no discernible reason.) It's a shame
that I'm still missing something that was relatively easy on Win95.

So if there are going to be some user-space tools to help automate the process
of mounting shares as the network comes up, that would be a welcome change.

Just so long as they aren't buggy, of course :)
