No change. Why would using 'sudo' be any different than being in the root shell
(which is what comment 5 indicates)?

In any case, I fixed the problem. There appear to be two different ways to fix
it:

1. blacklist the 'ideapad_laptop' module and reboot. (I place:

blacklist ideapad_laptop

in /etc/modprobe.d/99-local.conf)

2. Place the following contents in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/04-backlight.conf

Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
EndSection

Both suggestions I got from Ubuntu forums. I do not run Ubuntu, only openSUSE.

Note:

'sudo evtest':

jon@linux-k1fq:~> sudo evtest
root's password:
Usage: evtest /dev/input/eventX
Where X = input device number
jon@linux-k1fq:~>
