Nov 21 14:43:25 turnip systemd[1]: Unit mysql.service entered failed state. I ended up extracting the bits that start the 'protected' mysql daemon and running that, then running mysql_upgrade -p to force it to ask for my password. I do have a .my.cnf, but I tried moving that out of the way.
