This is a Lenovo T400 notebook. I noticed when suspending to RAM,
that the LED of my USB UMTS modem stick still blinks, even after an
hour.

That's fine as these ports are likely marked as no-suspend. (E.g. for phone
charging.)

You can tune this in /proc/acpi/wakeup.
