--- Comment #11 from Jean Delvare 2013-06-21 07:40:08 UTC ---
Additional information, which I think is valuable for reproducing the issue...
Today I have checked the CPU usage with "top" on a 12.3 machine where the
problem supposedly never happens. I noticed that gpk-update-viewer used about
50% of one logical CPU, while the actual update was using 100% of another
logical CPU. This is a powerful machine, so from a usability perspective
everything was fine.
The machine I mentioned in comment #10 where the problem always happens, is an
old laptop, with single logical CPU (single core and no hyper-threading). If
refreshing the graphical interface has higher priority than doing the actual
update, that would explain why on that machine the update never completes.
So I suspect that the bug is happening on a lot more machines than we thought,
but on most of them its effect goes unnoticed.
If anyone wants to reproduce this bug, I suggest doing so on a machine with a
single logical CPU (either a virtual machine, or a physical machine booted with
maxcpus=1.)
