UPDATE - I am able to boot the OpenSUSE 12.3 kernel (taken directly from the
DVD ISO image) via different bootloader, so the issue does NOT appear to be a
problem with the kernel itself, but rather the bootloader or some low-level
hardware initialization (?) performed by it. Specifically, I copied the kernel
from the DVD ISO and created a bootable USB key and used the EXTLINUX
bootloader, and there are no issues booting it as such - it only appears to be
the bootloader configuration used on the OpenSUSE 12.3 DVD ISOs (both
Installation DVD and Live DVD).
