Later I realized that I cannot use Alt++ in KMail to advance to the next unread folder anymore. Going to the previous unread folder using Alt+- works fine. Thus, the Alt key is not kaputt. And '+' itself works, too. First I thought KMail is broken. However, when swapping these hotkeys/shortcuts, advancing to the next unread folder works using Alt+-. I suspect X.Org eating the Alt++ hotkey/shortcut. Any ideas to debug this?
