--- Comment #14 from Graham Davis 2013-03-05 20:35:46 UTC ---
Video mode of GRUB is 'unspecified' but is 800x600 according to monitor.
According to the list of options in GRUB, 32-depth is not available.
I altered GRUB settings from 'unspecified' to 1400x1050x24 and rebooted. The
GRUB menu appeared to be OK but once GRUB had closed, the screen shifted 40% to
the right with the switch to 1920x1080 resolution. I logged in again and reset
back to 'unspecified' and, after re-boot, the correct alignment was restored.
I also tried GRUB at 1400x1050x16 and all was OK with the boot menu but the
splash and/or login screen were vertical coloured pinstripes and I had to power
off the machine to reboot.
Tried what I thought might be GRUB2 equivalent of 'unspecified' but that either
shifted 80% to right or 20% to left depending how you look at it but, either
way, not a rip-roaring success.
Decided to try the 800x600 resolution on GRUB2 and that worked OK, so we have a
winner!
[The other problem I mentioned about 'recovery mode' from GRUB2 is the same in
GRUB. I'll try this on another machine as I'm a bit suspicious about a warning
message I saw during the installation process about GRUB and GRUB2 being
incompatible with x86_64 architecture.]
