https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=792049 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=792049#c0 Summary: After kernel update - Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rkrell@gmx.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.20 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/25.0.1335.0 Safari/537.20 SUSE/25.0.1335.0 After updating to the each of the following kernels - kernel-desktop-3.4.11-2.16.1.x86_64.rpm (OpenSUSE 12.2 update) - kernel-desktop-3.6.7-12.2.x86_64.rpm (Tumbleweed) - kernel-desktop-3.6.8-1.1.x86_64.rpm + mkinitrd-2.7.2 (Kernel:Stable) using YaST and rebooting the system gets a kernel panic like Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) Pid: 1, comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 3.6.8-1-desktop #1 Call Trace: ... dump_trace+0x88/0x300 ... dump_stack+0x69/0x6f ... panic+0xbe/0x1c7 ... mount_block_root+0x1c6/0x266 ... prepare_namespace+0x138/0x16e ... kernel_init+0x1cf/0x1d4 ... kernel_thread_helper+0x4/0x10 After reinstalling the original kernel 3.4.6 with the installation CD the system boots again. I tried to figure out something in the rescue mode of the CD: --- mount -f auto /dev/sda1 /mnt mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys chroot /mnt /bin/bash rpm -Uvh --force kernel-desktop-3.4.11-2.16.1.x86_64.rpm --- installs but ends with the message --- does not exist, please run depmod and mkinitrd manually. --- So I did just: --- depmod 3.4.11-2.16-desktop mkinitrd --- and after rebooting the system came up normally. The same for the other kernels. True is that I updated all possible packages to Tumbleweed, but the problem affects also the official 12.2 update kernel. Another interesting fact is that this happened on my home computer, but not at work. What is wrong here, is there some leak? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Running kernel 3.4.6, updated to 3.4.11 from OpenSUSE update over YaST. 2. Reboot Actual Results: Kernel panic Expected Results: Normal boot -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
