Thanks Jeff for looking at it!
However this is a bug that makes the system unusable, so after some weeks
without any response from anyone I concluded reiserfs was still in the kernel
but no longer maintained and thus not a practical option, and started to
convert everything to ext4. The last one 2 weeks ago, so I can't reproduce any
longer. I really had to dig for these logs - thought I'd lost them in the last
re-install. If I'd known how to hunt this while I still had reiserfs it would
have been easy.
There's one other person on opensuse-de who has the same problem.
Some other tidbits I can give:
Several times the lockup occurred when typing the first character of the
password after reboot, in the kdm login screen (KDE 4 system). Sometimes there
wa no problem for 3 weeks, sometimes the reboot didn't finish.
Syslog is not of much use for tracking this, the sysrq output does not show up
on a remote syslog server (using UDP). The only possibly useful output I got
was via RS232 cable.
There was never anything of relevance in syslog just prior to any lockup.
