I don't think that this is kernel-related. On the same hardware, just different
disk partitions I run openSUSE 12.1 + Tumbleweed with an even newer kernel than
in 12.2M3. And there the WLAN module works out of the box without any problems
(with NetworkManager).
I compared the versions of a few components:
Kernel 12.2M3: 3.3.0-2-default #1 SMP Sat Mar 24 00:11:53 UTC 2012 (7e9dd21)
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Kernel 12.1+TW: 3.3.1-19-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Apr 7 16:43:56 UTC 2012
(c31d1b5) i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
udev 12.2.M3: udev-181-2.1.i586
udev 12.1+TW: udev-173-3.3.1.i586
ipw 12.2M3: ipw-firmware-9-11.3.noarch
ipw 12.1+TW: ipw-firmware-9-9.1.1.noarch
