Tried the suggestions from comment #15 desperate as I am, but they don't fix
anything. Gnome shell is still unstable. I guess two more weeks in fallback
mode.

and let the forums user please_try_again help you. There may be a few changes
he needs to make for it to work in gnome as well.

6tr6tr R, the issues discussed in the forum are not the ones discussed here. I
got the driver properly installed and direct rendering is available. It is just
so hat there are bugs in the driver that cause crashes when using gnome shell.
Things work fine with compiz (which uses indirect rendering). As far as I
understood, for the issues described here, we'll just have to wait for an
update from AMD.
