I finally learned to install openchrome (alas, in my case not quick, but
dirty*) from trunk via checkinstall, and vlc and kaffeine do not crash at a
first trial. I do not know whether other problems will occur, but this reported
bug seems to be fixed in openchrome from trunk.
I have not found a new version of unichrome yet to install manually. Unichrome
at sourceforge seems to be abandonned some years ago, indeed.

make-process mesa), but other problems did not occur with
svn checkout http://svn.openchrome.org/svn/trunk openchrome
cd openchrome
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
make
checkinstall
(not true: version (3) has to be changed, as 0.2.904 is given three times and
this 'tag' confuses checkinstall - but that's it)
