Is this still an issue? I just tried 12.1 Milestone 5 and I was able to log in
using XFCE as desktop. The selection for XFCE was done in the beginning where
others will try KDE or GNOME.
I am on a Virtualbox. I did select the hostname and domain name during
installation and got the following in my hosts file (Among other things)
10.0.2.15 factory.houghi factory
I am using the traditional method with ifup.
So several things could be the case now:
1) The problem is solved
2) ifup works, but not NetworkManager
3) Selecting "Use Automatic Configuration" during installation does not writes
to /etc/hosts, while if you de-select it, it will write to /etc/hosts
Unfortunately I do not now have the time to test the different options, so if
somebody has the time ...
